“STAM-PEDE”Returning for a third year, the annual percussive dance sampler boasts the two hoofers who went home with Bessie Awards in 2011. The talented Caleb Teicher is just starting out, but Michelle Dorrance has already proven herself to be one of the most imaginative tap choreographers working today. They are joined by Chicago Tap Theatre, which goes in for narrative, and by David Parker and the Bang Group. Maya de Silva brings her Flamenco Revolución, while Parijat Desai represents a contemporary take on bharata natyam. (Symphony Space, Broadway at 95th St. 212-864-5400. Jan. 8 at 3.)
“FOCUS DANCE” The Joyce starts off the New Year with a six-day festival of small and mid-sized dance companies from across the country, grouped into mixed bills. Most, like Keigwin + Company and Kate Weare, are familiar to New York audiences. The final program (Jan. 6 and Jan.
includes the always fresh and imaginative Trey McIntyre Project, last seen in New York several years ago, as well the spitfire tapper Jason Samuels Smith. For full programs, visit joyce.org. (175 Eighth Ave., at 19th St. 212-242-0800. Jan. 4 at 7:30, Jan. 5-6 at 8, Jan. 7 at 2 and 8, and Jan. 8 at 2 and 7:30.)
